When factories receive raw milk from farms, the milk typically contains impurities such as dust and fine animal hair. Initially, a disc separator is used for clarification, after which the milk proceeds to the pasteurization stage. For factories requiring skimmed milk to produce butter or cream, a three-phase milk separator is employed for degreasing following clarification. Approximately 3% of the fat content is separated and discharged as the light liquid phase, while skimmed milk is collected from the heavy liquid phase, and solid impurities are expelled through the dedicated solid outlet. Additionally, this separator is widely used in the separation of whey and cheese.
Structure and Working Principle
The separator’s bowl rotates at high speed around its main shaft, powered by a motor via a hydraulic coupling and screw gear pair.
Feed liquid enters the bottom of the bowl through the upper feed pipe, then passes through the holes in the disc stack base to initiate the separation process. Under the effect of a high-intensity centrifugal force field:
The heavy liquid phase flows along the inner walls of the discs toward the bowl’s inner wall. After ascending along the bowl’s inner surface, it is discharged by the heavy liquid pump.
The light liquid phase flows along the inner walls of the discs toward the central pipe, then rises to the light liquid outlet and is discharged by the light liquid pump.
Larger solid particles are retained and settle on the inner wall of the bowl. Controlled by the sliding bowl mechanism, these solid sediments are subsequently discharged through the dedicated solids outlet.
