Corn Starch Separation & Purification Process
Disc separators are utilized to separate starch from gluten (also referred to as protein) in corn starch production. During the separation process, gluten is separated into the light liquid phase, while crude starch milk is discharged from the heavy liquid phase. Notably, the crude starch milk contains approximately 1%–2% residual gluten, which requires further removal to ensure product purity.
In traditional production processes, three disc separators of the same model but with different nozzle diameters were typically employed for this separation step. However, this configuration has become obsolete due to its high initial investment cost.
In modern large-capacity production facilities, an optimized process is adopted: a single disc separator is combined with a 9–12 stage hydrocyclone system to wash the crude starch milk, ultimately yielding high-purity corn starch. Under standard production conditions, approximately 0.7 kg of corn starch can be obtained from 1 kg of corn raw material.

Working Principle of DPF-Type Separator
The DPF-type separator is primarily composed of key components including a feeding device, rotating drum, cover, machine body, horizontal shaft, vertical shaft, washing bottom pump, base, and motor.
During operation, when the rotating drum operates at a high rotational speed, the material is delivered into the disc separation zone via the feeding pump.
(1). Under the influence of the high-intensity centrifugal force field generated by the rotating drum, starch particles—due to their higher density—migrate to the inner wall of the drum and are discharged through the nozzles.
(2). In contrast, lighter-phase substances such as protein converge toward the center of the drum and are expelled from the machine via the centripetal pump.
(3).The separator is equipped with a dedicated washing bottom pump. Washing water is injected into the drum through the vertical central hole
(4). which serves to rinse the yellow paste contained in the starch material. This washing process effectively enhances the purity and overall quality of the final starch product.
